We believe children learn best through movement and exploring the world around them. This set is designed to help kids practice letter recognition and beginning sounds by inviting them to explore the classroom or home to find environmental print for each letter and objects that start with each letter.
TIPS & IDEAS FOR USE
Decide whether children will create a full journal with each page for the alphabet or whether you’ll use the pages independently.
You may choose to focus solely on letters that kids need extra practice on, or you can create a complete ABC Journal for each child and add one of the included covers.
Ideally we would like to encourage kids to find letters and objects around them. This can be done by looking at posters, food boxes, books, and other print-rich items around them in their homes or classrooms to find letters and objects.
Each page includes four sections:
- I can trace it. Kids can use their favorite writing tool and the prompts to trace the letter.
- I can write it. Kids can use their favorite writing tool to write the letter on their own.
- I can make tallies when I find it. Encourage kids to look around the room, in cabinets, on toys, in/on books…wherever they can spot letters and make a tally or general mark each time they find the letter.
- I can find and draw things that start with the letter. Encourage kids to find and draw objects that start with the focus letter. Be sure to give a little help or let kids think of their own ideas for any letters that may not have a lot of options.
